Linux full disk encryption

Set up reasonably secure encryption without sacrificing too much computing power. I had previously configured only a single encrypted partition but the PAM unlocking caused many troubles. Advantage of the full disk encryption is that you have secured everything including swap partition.  (more…)

Xubuntu upgrade to 13.10 with troubles

New (X)Ubuntu switched to systemd and it brought new challenges with upgrading. I use Xubuntu fork but this might affect others as well. I can’t turn off or hibernate the computer. Even after logout there are no buttons for powering off. And I can’t access NetworkManager. (more…)

Fixing Ubuntu “Open with”

First there was the annoying default “Wine Internet Explorer” for opening images. Why? I found the default source, I deleted it and then it was “Firefox”. Why??? I have different image viewers. Linux distributions are starting to behave like MSW. (more…)

Ubuntu encrypted home

I played with my new toy – HP Mini 5103 WT211ES. eCryptfs is not as enterprise as they say. It started to fail on Ubuntu 10.10. And also it is terribly slow especially for seeking. So I was looking for a better solution. I didn’t want the full disk encryption which the alternative CD offers during the installation because the disk is very fast and the CPU is not so fast 🙂 I decided to make a separate partition to host my home directory and other private data.
